Medical Training Room on Wheels Visits Sanford Sheldon

04/23/2010
Sanford Sheldon Medical Center provided medical professionals some hands-on experience when the Ridgewater College mobile training facility (SimLabL1) visited Sheldon. The mobile unit is a fully functional emergency room that Sanford Sheldon used to provide education and training for medical professionals.

The SimLab is completely state of the art and provides the perfect atmosphere for medical professionals to obtain hands-on training. It is one of only several within the United States. The training is completed on lifelike manikins that reproduce lifelike human functions such as breathing, sweating, breathing and talking. When the manikins are given medications, the manikin’s body reacts and knows what he was given.

The two simulated scenarios that Sanford Sheldon medical professionals dealt with were a manikin having chest pain and a manikin having a difficult child birth. The entire simulation was completed by the staff and following the completion of the simulation a debriefing was held to go through their procedures, actions and interactions with the simulation manikins. Research shows that the hands-on nature of simulation training is more effective than only classroom based education. Rick Nordahl, CEO of Sanford Sheldon states “SimLab L1 utilizes some of the most advanced training tools and techniques to utilize practice based education in their jobs. The mobile lab also provides the opportunity to develop team building and leadership skills which are essential in emergency situations to achieve the desired outcome”.
